Every year 100s of people flock to the small village of Clifden in Connemara Co.Galway on the West coast of Ireland to see the best of the Irish ponies compete throughout the week, followed by a two day sale at the weekend.
This year as even more exciting as I was asked by Gerry Quinn the founder of Hillview connemara and Irish Draft stud Co. Rosscommon to ride his 8yo connemara stallion Lightening Star in the Stallion Performance class at the show. Of course I jumped at the chance!
Bobby as he is known at home is a very popular young stallion in Ireland covering over 50 mares a season, we have imported 6 of his offspring to produce, all who have had excellent temperaments.
After managing to get the BIGGEST bag of hand luggage through with Ryan Air that included a Bridle, Stirrups, leathers, long boots, riding hat, hacking jacket and a showing cane! It was then straight to Rosscommon for a last minute jump on Bobby less than 24 hours before the show.
Bobby jumped a super clear round which included banks, steps, a water complex and working hunter fences to be placed 5th in a very competitive stallion class. Riding at the show was a wonderful experience and one I'd love to repeat again, I am so grateful to Gerry for allowing me to ride his super little stallion and who knows we might be taking one of his progeny back there to follow in his hoofprints.
